Fridice Khreamlo: The Earth Itself (Inspired by Frida Kahlo, 1939) Space Donut

$35.00

The Earth itself was commissioned by actress Dolores del Rio and is one of my favorite of Frida’s paintings. In it, Mother Earth comforts a woman (likely Frida in one of the many forms in which she depicted herself in her work) who is desperately in need of care and who has been unable to find it anywhere else. Friday Kahlo was the first artist to depict women’s pain openly, boldly, and fearlessly, bringing that which was previously hidden from politely society into public view, forcing those who viewed her work to acknowledge and sit with her discomfort, loss, and rage.

I chose shaved ice for this work to allow a contrast between a glittering confection and the subject of the painting.

Golden paints acrylics and glitter on 8”x10” canvas board.
