Fridice Khreamlo: The Dream (My Bed) (Inspired by Frida Khalo, 1940) Space Donut
Frida Kahlo didn’t fear death but she did have a very close relationship with it; after surviving polio as a child and a serious tram accident that left her with 27 broken bones, damaged organs, chronic pain and disabilities as young adult, she knew its presence well. Whether or not she ultimately took. her own life is still a matter of debate but is less important than the fact she lived for many years with serious physical and psychological trauma.
She often painted images of this trauma, as she does here in The Dream (My Bed) with death sharing a space to which she was often confined and in which she often made the art that is permeated by death and its symbolism. That symbolism is often appears whimsical, borrowed from traditional Mexican folk art but, like the stories I try to tell with my own reinterpretations is one of serious contemplation and a commentary on finding what joy one can in days filled with difficult and painful challenges.
Golden Paints acrylics , felt tipped pen, gel pen, and glitter on upcycled 4”x4” hexagonal tile.
